STORYLINES

Carolina Core FC Falls to Orlando City B in Tough Battle

The Foxes took on Orlando City B at Osceola Heritage Park for their second encounter of the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season. Following CCFC's victory in the initial match against OCB in High Point, Orlando City B sought revenge and prevailed over The Foxes 3-1, thanks to a brace from OCB midfielder Justin Ellis and a goal from substitute forward Thalles Gomes-Ferreira. CCFC forward Josuha Rodríguez also got on the score sheet, but it was not enough to pull the Foxes back. Although OCB dominated the scoreboard, CCFC actually surpassed them in offensive statistics. CCFC recorded 24 shots compared to OCB's 13, with 12 on target against 8. The season series between the clubs is now tied, and they will see one more match this year to provide a winner.

Player to Watch

Josuha Rodríguez made an immediate impact upon entering the match in the 65th minute, while Carolina Core FC was down by two goals. Just ten minutes after taking the field, Rodríguez’s relentless pressing in Orlando City B’s penalty area resulted in a turnover, with the rebound from Derek Cuevas landing perfectly at his feet. Showing composure, Rodríguez skillfully placed the ball into the bottom-left corner, providing momentum for the Foxes. During his 25-minute stint, Rodríguez recorded three shots, one of which was scored, and successfully completed every pass he attempted. Even though The Foxes did not come away with a win, Rodríguez’s dynamic performance and precise finish could bring an increasing influence and potential within the team. As Carolina Core FC returns home July 19th to take on Atlanta United 2, the Honduran will hope to make another strong impact.

Atlanta United 2 takes down Columbus Crew 2

An exciting match at Fifth Third Stadium saw Atlanta United 2 fight from behind to defeat Columbus Crew 2 with a 3-2 result. Atlanta United 2’s Patrick Weah earned his first brace of his career, helping lead the team to all three points. The first half of the match was tied 0-0 with few opportunities. Rodrigo Neri broke the stalemate in the 56th minute with a sneaky chipped finish, marking his fifth goal of the season. Columbus responded quickly through Quinton Elliot after a well-executed corner, equalizing at 1-1 just six minutes later. Substitute attacker Patrick Weah became the hero for Atlanta United 2, earning and converting a penalty in the 76th minute for his first goal of the season. He then scored again to increase the lead six minutes later with a tap-in from Ryan Carmichael’s cross, securing the victory for Atlanta United 2. Columbus Crew 2 scored in the final minutes, but the goal was not enough to spark a comeback for the squad.
